Another old post that I never posted. Peaceful Restaurant, of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives fame, has opened two more locations since they’ve been on the show. One is in the Mount Pleasant area on 5th and Quebec Street. Compared to the dingy interior of the original Broadway location, this one looks much more refined. Okay maybe not refined but the interior is simple, clean and spacious. It is also less busy than the original location.
On this occasion, I was getting takeout. This was the Peaceful House Rice with diced pork, shrimp, vegetables and cilantro. Described on the menu as slightly spicy, there was some heat to the rice and the fried rice was packed with ingredients. The assortment of veggies made the dish more colourful.
We also had the Mandarin Lamb Rice with diced lamb, carrot, celery, egg and cilantro. I was surprised to find that this fried rice was not made with just white rice, but a variety of other rice as well giving the fried rice some different textures. It was actually quite addictive.
You can’t go to Peaceful Restaurant without getting some of their famous Beef Rolls. These are seriously flaky!!! The pancake was slightly crispy on the outside while still being chewy and there was a good amount of beef inside with hoisin sauce and green onion. Each order comes with four pieces and they’re pretty big.
The Shanghai Stir Fried Thick Noodles were so oily, it was terrible!!! It’s possibly the oiliest dish I’ve had in my entire life…
There was literally a pool of oil at the bottom. Looking back now, I’m not sure why I finished this (ok maybe I was really hungry). Well I’m sure the rice we had was oily too but the rice just soaked it up…
The last dish we had was the Xian Lamb Stew with diced flatbread, lamb, napa cabbage, cilantro and vermicelli. I’m not really sure what the diced flatbread was but it had a weird texture that I didn’t like. This was possibly the healthiest dish we had since the broth was light and there was a lot of cabbage. For some reason the container for this was really tall. It would’ve been better if it was shorter and wider.
It’s good old greasy Chinese food here and I have warned you about the grease. You can try telling them to use less oil though. You must also get the beef rolls!
