Temaki Sushi is located on Broadway and Arbutus and down the street from BC Sushi. I’ve only been there once many years ago and my friend suggested we come here for a group dinner. We had 7 people so we had a nice booth to ourselves. I saw that the reviews were good on Zomato so I was interested in trying it again but it fell short of expectations.
We started off by sharing two orders of the Assorted Tempura. Each piece was hot, crispy and not too greasy. This came with 4 pieces of prawn and 3 pieces of vegetable.
Spicy Agedashi Tofu. Didn’t try this.
One of us ordered the Beef Teriyaki which comes with a bowl of rice and miso soup. I don’t order beef teriyaki often but the version at Temaki Sushi had large amounts of bean sprouts on the bottom so the dish was very watery after the hot plate cooked the bean sprouts so the flavour was diluted after everything was mixed together. We talked to the server about this and asked for extra sauce to give it more flavour. The server just said that it was suppose to be like that.
The Roll Combo came with Dynamite Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll and Chopped Scallop Roll. Each roll was well assembled and nicely presented. The proportion of rice to filling and the quality of the ingredients made each bite perfect.
More rolls, sorry not sure what they were!
Two of us had the Sashimi Tempura Box which came with rice, miso soup and a side salad. The box comes with a California roll, 5pcs tuna and sockeye salmon sashimi, assorted tempura and chicken teriyaki. At a cost of $20, it felt a bit pricey and the two people who ordered this said that it was just alright and they would give it a 3 or 3.5 out of 5.
As for myself, I had the Oyako Don which is fried chicken with egg and onions. The portion was quite large and came with lots of rice. I was expecting a lot more flavour from this though. There was barely any sauce and the chicken was almost tasteless. It wasn’t marinated well and the batter had no flavour either. It’s hard to go wrong with fried chicken so this was very disappointing.
Overall it wasn’t a very memorable dinner or perhaps we should have stuck with more rolls. Service was good and our tea was constantly re-filled.
