Shaved ice from 17°C Dessert Café took over Instagram recently after they opened over the May long weekend. If you’ve been reading my blog long enough, you’ll know that I hate line ups so obviously I wasn’t the first one there but thankfully I was invited by ChineseBites for a private tasting. Yay!
The items with the crown are their best sellers.
Funky pictures on the wall.
First off, we have their Instagram friendly lightbulb drinks made from glass (just clarifying because I had a friend who thought they recycled real lightbulbs). These drinks are available to be made with green tea or club soda.
From left to right: Lemon, Red Pomegranate, Kiwi, Passion Fruit.
I thought these weren’t sweet enough for me and I don’t like the taste of club soda so it didn’t work for me. The drinks are made with syrups and some fruit is also added but flavours were sort of artificial. The owners said that they have been tweaking the drinks based on customer feedback and I really wanted to like them but it wasn’t that great. The rest of the world is trying to cut back on sugar though so some people may appreciate that these aren’t too sweet. I also tried the passion fruit with green tea and it literally just tasted like that. It needs more sugar!!!
Did you know the owners are only 24?! What am I doing with my life…
The Watermelon Shaved Ice is made with an entire watermelon with the insides scooped out. There is a LOT of shaved ice hidden inside. The shaved ice was very milky tasting and fluffy in texture. There is also condensed milk served on the side for you to pour over it. This costs $14.99 and is good for 4 people.
Next we tried the Honeydew Shaved Ice served with a Melona popsicle and popping boba (like at Qoola). The flavour of the Melona popsicle blended in perfectly with the honeydew! The popping boba didn’t really work though and it was grape flavoured? Maybe they could’ve mixed it inside with the shaved ice instead. This also comes with condensed milk.
The last one we tried was the Oreo Shaved Ice with a scoop of ice cream on top and two pieces of Oreo. I like Oreo anything so this worked for me! Maybe they can mix in some crushed Oreo underneath the shaved ice as well? It’s really just a mound of shaved ice so it would’ve made it more interesting to have more Oreo with every bite. I’m just saying that because I love Oreo.
The Strawberry Yogurt Parfait had strawberry jelly on the bottom, plain yogurt, sliced strawberries and a rice krispy-like cereal on top along with some strawberry Japanese candy. This was a super simple dessert and I make this myself for a snack at work so I can’t imagine that people would actually order it here…It just wasn’t very dessert-like and not very sweet either. Maybe they should replace these with a different item like ice cream parfaits.
Lastly, we tried the Mango Tapioca. This was super bland to me and really needed more sugar! Moreover, it was served at room temperature and it should be either hot or cold. I prefer cold, especially in the summer. They could’ve also added a few more pieces of fresh mango on top. There was literally like five pieces on top.
If you visit 17°C Dessert Café, stick with the shaved ice. Personally I still like Icy Bar more where I can customize the toppings I want with my shaved ice but it’s always good to have more dessert options in the area!
