The latest ChineseBites event was a dim sum tour at Victory Seafood Restaurant. Located on the second floor in Crystal Mall, this is actually a very large and spacious restaurant. It’s just past the food court.
Feast your eyes! We had 37 dishes for 10 people! This wasn’t even everything we had! I’ve never seen so much dim sum in my entire life. I’ll just be sharing my thoughts on a few items that I tried.
The first to arrive was the BBQ Pork Pastry! It had a beautiful flaky golden exterior and the inside had delicious sweet BBQ pork filling. At the back we have the Pineapple BBQ Pork Bun but I didn’t try it. It looks promising though.
Deep Fried Dumpling with Minced Pork: I like the crisp shell and slightly chewy texture to it.
This Smoked Salmon Fruit Tart was AWFUL! Not even sure why it’s a dim sum dish!!! Nobody should ever order this. It has that canned fruit stuff with mayo under the smoked salmon… The Steamed Rice Rolls with Chinese Donut were delicious in contrast.
A few of my favourite steamed items from top left to right: Chiu Chow Style Dumpling, Shrimp Dumpling, Beef Balls, Siu Mai. The dumplings had lots of filling, the shrimp was bouncy, the beef balls had that soft but somewhat spongy texture and I think the siu mai was really just another version of a pork ball since it lacked shrimp.
Deep Fried Shrimp Spring Rolls, Panfried Chinese Pancake with Leeks, Panfried Lotus Root and Radish Cakes. Spring rolls had great presentation and were full of shrimp. I personally enjoyed the pancake with leeks, the texture wasn’t greasy and the pancake was chewy. Didn’t try the last item.
Steamed Bean Curd Wrap with Mushrooom and Pork and Steamed Sticky Rice Buns. Whoever invented the steamed sticky rice buns are a genius! I just love sticky rice in any shape or form.
Shrimp rice rolls and plain rice rolls. We also had mushroom rice rolls and beef rice rolls not pictured. Funny story time: we accidentally dumped the sauce for the beef balls (Worcestershire sauce) on the shrimp rolls so they tasted weird.
The Steamed Red Rice Roll with Shrimp was a sight to behold. None of us had ever seen this before! We also never found out why it was red but it did taste good. The inside has shrimp in a crispy shell or it might’ve been wrapped in a Chinese donut? It was surprisingly good though despite the strange appearance.
Egg Tarts! I always have to order this of course. I thought this version was a bit too… egg-y. But wait hear me out! I don’t mean the inside part which obviously has egg in it but I mean that the pastry shell just tasted a bit different, like it had too much egg wash? I don’t even know if you egg wash the outside of an egg tart. Sorry I can’t really explain the taste but texture wise it was nice and flaky.
I enjoyed all the dim sum I tried and I think their quality and presentation is good! I did come here for dinner once and it wasn’t very memorable but maybe dim sum is a different story.
