MagiCream-This Ice Cream is Amazeballs

Disclaimer: All food was complimentary but opinions are my own

Foodgressing was organizing a media tasting on behalf of MagiCream and kindly invited me to go! I had seen a few photos on Instagram but I hadn’t really heard much else about them. They seem to be the only liquid nitrogen ice cream shop not located in downtown. They are in Kerrisdale to be exact. Little did I know, I was about to be impressed.

The interior is very white and clean looking. When you walk past their window everything just looks white.

According to the owner, they just commercial mixers instead of just Kitchen Aids. MagiCream

MagiCream offers three sizes: Regular ($5.50), Medium ($7.50) and Family ($9). Pricing is reasonable.

We were all going to share so we ordered the family size.

They offer a sorbet base too if you’re lactose intolerant.

I love that they have so many flavours!!! I’m always indecisive but I still like having lots of options to choose from. Taro, Pistachio, Tiramisu and Red Velvet  all sounded good to me. MagiCream

Toppings are $0.99 each and the options are extensive as well. They offered a lot of toppings that Qoola or Menchies would have so this list should feel familiar to you.

On the left we have Milk Tea with Pearls and Mango Jelly. I discovered milk tea ice cream last year and I was going to order it this time but for the sake of variety, I picked something else. The milk tea had a nice flavour to it and the texture was smooth and creamy. The one on the right was Ovaltine with Walnuts. I was so impressed that this tasted EXACTLY like Ovaltine!!! It was really good and one of my faves!!! I was surprised that I liked it more than the milk tea flavour. Not that it was bad, it’s all relative.

Also, the ice cream didn’t melt very fast. It stayed nice and cold so that I didn’t feel like I was in a rush to finish it all before it melted.

I ordered Black Sesame with Reese’s Cups and Shredded Sweetened Coconut. This was my other favourite! The black sesame was super strong and nutty and you can taste the grainy bits of sesame mixed in with the ice cream. I didn’t think about the toppings beforehand and the addition of the Reese’s peanut butter cups also made it nuttier. Honestly I don’t think you need any toppings for their ice cream because the flavours are so strong already I wouldn’t want any toppings to distract me from the flavour. It’s enjoyable on it’s own already!

From left to right: Strawberry with Cheesecake Bites, Chocolate with Brownie Bites and Chocolate Sauce, Coffee with Cookie Dough and Mochi and Mango Sorbet with Mango and Lychee Jelly.

All the flavours were strong and tasted exactly as advertised. We didn’t feel that they were too sweet either. Okay except for the chocolate with brownie bites and chocolate sauce, you gotta have a really big sweet tooth for all that chocolate! I also found the mango sorbet to be quite refreshing as well. It was also the only sorbet we ordered so maybe that was why.

Finally we have Root Beer with Gumy Bears and Caramel with Popcorn. The root beer tasted just like a root beer float!

In terms of seating, they have a cushioned window seat that you can sit on or you just stand and eat around the 2 bar-style tables.

I haven’t felt so strongly about ice cream in a while! Probably since my post on Tangram Creamery. I really have no complaints about MagiCream and I enjoyed all the flavours I tried here. I think I had low expectations for their ice cream so they really exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend a visit! It’s not gimmicky like Lik with their syringes or overpriced like Mister (albeit it’s in Yaletown).
