I’ve made multiple visits to Dinesty so I thought it was time to update my post. This was the culmination of two visits to the Aberdeen location. Dinesty is located on the second floor near Chef Hung and Guu. They have expanded again this year and now have a location near Metrotown as well.
Pictured above are the Shredded Pork in Hoisin Sauce with Pancakes and the Drunken Chicken. The pork is saucy but tasty and it’s always fun to make your own pancake wraps. The drunken chicken is served chilled and the portion is not that big but there’s plenty of wine flavour.
One of my favourite vegetable dishes to order is the Spicy Green Beans with Minced Pork. The green beans are quite oily but manage to stay very snappy and crisp. I also love the spicy flavours from the chili sauce.
In the back, we have the Fried Rice with Beef and XO Sauce. A pretty standard fried rice dish.
I think this was the Sweet and Spicy Grouper with Pine Nuts? I don’t see any pine nuts though but it was some kind of deep fried sweet and spicy fish. I wouldn’t have thought of ordering this myself but my friends wanted it and I really liked it due to the sweet and spicy sauce. It was more like sweet and sour though.
Don’t worry, we didn’t forget the Xiao Long Bao (XLB)! The XLB here is smaller but the skin was thin and the insides were juicy and I thought it was pretty good.
My other favourite go-to Shanghainese dish is the Tea Smoked Duck. It was nicely smoked and crispy on the outside and there was lots of tender meat. I had it on a different occasion and it was over-fried with less meat though so it can be a hit or a miss.
Another favourite vegetable dish of mine is the Stewed Eggplant with Shredded Pork in Chili Sauce. This chili sauce is BOMB! I need to go buy some! To be honest, I’d probably eat a lot more vegetables if they were all covered in chili sauce! The eggplant was cooked perfectly, not mushy, still very purple somehow and there were also some bamboo shoots and wood ear fungus and green/red peppers mixed in as well. The sauce is like a mixture of sweet and sour and spicy at the same time. Very addictive!
That concludes another post on Dinesty. They’ve been around for a few years now and it’s a pretty good option for Shanghainese food and they always seem busy. Service could be better though since they had some empty tables that weren’t cleared very quickly and tons of people were waiting and it just doesn’t look good.
