If you love brunch as much as I do, then you’ve probably heard of the ridiculous line ups at Jam Cafe. This is their second location and the first is in Victoria.
If you didn’t already know, I hate line ups. Or if you knew, you’re probably sick of me saying this all the time. Luckily for me, I enticed my boyfriend with photos and reviews of Jam Cafe and he lined up for me =’D I joined him about half way through so the total wait was over an hour but less than 1.5hrs. He’s lined up for other things before so he has more patience than me. There is room for more all day breakfast/brunch restaurants in Vancouver if you’re thinking of getting into the restaurant business! While we were waiting, a server came out with samples of their waffles which made the wait more bearable. The waffles were so good I considered ordering them but I had waffles the day before so I didn’t.
WE’RE IN! Really liked the decorations here! There were so many delicious things I wanted to order like the red velvet pancakes, the pulled pork pancakes, the chicken and waffles etc. They need a plate where I get 1 piece of each! Like a brunch buffet!
This was the Charlie Bowl (no not the little one) and I saw this all over Instagram and reviews on Yelp so I wanted to try it. It was massive!!! This bowl had hash with crumbled biscuit, hash browns, diced ham, green onions, cheddar topped with sausage gravy and two sunny side eggs. The crumbled biscuit was very buttery and I loved the melted cheddar with the diced ham. However, the hash was a bit dry and lacked seasoning and really needed a lot of ketchup. Or you need to eat it with a bit of everything else. It was a good hearty and comforting meal but I don’t think I would get this again. And needless to say, we had to pack the rest of this to go.
The Pork Belly Benedict came with two poached eggs, two pieces of pork belly, onion jam, bbq sauce, and classic Hollandaise over a toasted English muffin. Funny story, recently my brother forgot what eggs Benedict were called and referred to it as “those two eggs on those things”. Luckily I knew exactly what he meant.
The pork belly was not too fatty or salty but the edges were drier than I would’ve liked. The hollandaise sauce and bbq sauce went really well with everything though! The English muffin was buttery and there was a bit of onion jam on it that I wanted more of. The hash or potato rosti? was again, not very enticing. Personally I would’ve preferred some well-seasoned smashed potatoes. Also, for the egg I asked for medium poached but it was a little less runny than I expected. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this dish!
I’m glad I managed to try Jam Cafe! My wallet ain’t complaining (both were $15) and portions are great as well! Maybe they will open another location soon because I probably won’t be re-visiting for 3 years or something… Thanks again to my boyfriend for lining up! :)
