My co-workers and I trekked over to Nuba in Gastown for a Friday lunch last month. We made reservations and it was getting pretty busy by the time we arrived. Nuba is located on the corner of Cambie and Hastings, at the basement level. It always seemed a bit mysterious to me!
My colleagues ordered the freshly squeezed juice of the day which was a refreshing blend of Strawberry, Cantaloupe and Orange, I believe. I’ve never had cantaloupe in juice before but it worked really well in this combination.
We also decided to share the Najib’s Special, crispy cauliflower tossed in lemon and sea salt, served with a side of tahini and pickled cabbage. We squeezed extra lemon juice over it and the acidity gave it an extra kick. The cauliflower was so addictive! The blend of salty and sour flavours was very memorable and who doesn’t like deep fried veggies? So glad I finally tried it!
For lunch, Nuba offers various lunch plates as well as pitas for $10-15. I had the Lamb Hushwie which had sauteed lamb with onions, peppers, pine nuts and spices over hummus rolled in pita bread. All pitas are served with organic greens, tomato, homemade pickle and tahini. The pita bread was light and thinner than I expected and the lamb flavours really shone through. I also liked the creamy hummus/tahini or whatever that green stuff is! My only complaint is that the wrapping was really bad and it was extremely difficult to unwrap and eat. Also, part of my wrapper was broken at the other end so stuff was falling out as well. Otherwise, no complaints!
I enjoyed my visit to Nuba much more than the first time I was there and also I liked the ambiance and decorations here compared to their Mount Pleasant location. I highly recommend the Najib’s special!
