As a huge fan of Taiwanese thick toast and carbs in general, I was drawn to the toasts from Passion 8 Dessert Cafe. Here they call them “toastery”. They are also known for their shaved ice. Passion 8 is located on Cambie and 14th near Tropika.
I really didn’t feel like having shaved ice though since it was -5 outside but they come in two different sizes and you can also do take out as well. Actually in general I’m not crazy for shaved ice if there are other options around. I haven’t even been to Snowy Village yet!
In addition, Passion 8 also serves a small selection of cake slices as well as Tiramisu in a jar. We went with the original flavour but it comes in a matcha flavour as well. I was slightly miffed that the ribbon was stained with cocoa powder but otherwise it looked cute and hipster!
Their version of tiramisu was layered with spongy espresso infused cake layers and cream cheese. Or at least it tasted like cream cheese to me. It was good but not that special.
For our toastery, I went with the Nutella Choco ($7.50) which came on a hot pan garnished with mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings, whipped cream and pecans. What makes their toastery special is that the bottom layer is a regular slice of toast spread with Nutella while the top layer is actually made of puff pastry. Other flavours include multigrain (injulmi), creamcheese orange, and honey creamcheese.
The puff pastry layer was super flaky and messy to eat but it made this dessert a bit lighter than just having more toast on top. I will eat anything with Nutella and this satisfied my sweet tooth.
This Korean cafe is very bright and spacious inside. They open at 3pm on weekdays and 1pm on weekends. It could be a nice place to study in the afternoon as well. I will be back to try their shaved ice!
