The Tap Shack is like a smaller version of Tap and Barrel located along the seawall by the new convention centre. It’s counterpart Tap and Barrel is literally steps away but if you want to be closer to the seawall you can stop by at the Tap Shack instead. They also have a location by the Burrard Bridge.
Happy hour is between 3-6pm everyday. My co-workers and I came here last week to enjoy the last bits of summer and patio weather. Their patio area overlooks Coal Harbour and they also have indoor seating for the cold, winter days.
Featured above is the virgin Raspberry Crush with raspberries, soda and lemonade. It was refreshing and I’m sure the alcoholic version would’ve been great as well. I don’t really drink so I can’t comment on the drink selection!
The Chicken Tacos are $4.95 during happy hour and comes with red mole chicken, salsa, slaw, aged white cheddar, spicy yogurt and fresh cilantro on a corn tortilla. I didn’t think the taco was very flavourful and it could’ve used more sauce.
We ordered the Dip Trio to share which comes with hummus, salsa, and warm portobello mushroom dip along with veggies, tortilla chips and multigrain toast. I thought they could’ve given us more tortilla chips and I thought the salsa was too chunky so it wasn’t really good for dipping. The warm portobello mushroom dip was interesting although I’m not a huge fan of mushrooms. I also heard that the toast was kinda hard.
During happy hour, they have a 2 for 1 popcorn deal so we had the Vegan White Cheddar Popcorn and the Togarashi Lemon Pepper Popcorn. I didn’t try the popcorn so I can’t comment.
We shared the Local Wild Mushroom Pizza which came with mushrooms, truffle oil and arugula. This was alright, had a nice chewy crust.
They have two desserts here: Cheesecake Mousse and Chocolate Cake. The cheesecake mousse is made with mascarpone cheesecake, dark chocolate tuile and berry compote. I didn’t try this but it didn’t look like what I was expecting. Also there seemed to be a lot of berry compote compared to cheesecake.
For myself I had the four layer chocolate cake with vanilla whipped cream. It was an enormous slice of cake! Nothing too special but it was moist and chocolatey. Maybe they can make their whipped cream look better…
The Tap Shack didn’t have a lot of happy hour food options that appealed to me. The only discounted happy hour food items mentioned above were the chicken tacos and the popcorn. However I didn’t check out their drinks which is probably what most people have during happy hour so it’s not a comprehensive happy hour review. If you’re just here for the view though it’s a great spot to hang out.
FYI there is only one bathroom (with an Archie mural on the door) but there are some public washrooms outside.
