My friend and I were going to watch Captain Marvel in the afternoon but first we had to have brunch! We decided on Mamie Taylor’s because I saw on Instagram they had a new brunch menu. They are located in Chinatown across from Phnom Penh on Georgia Street. I know it’s not where you think a brunch spot would be, especially not in the middle of a block of Chinese grocery stores and Chinese herbal medicine shops. The signage isn’t exactly obvious so it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it.
Their menu is separated into 3 categories: Sammies, Skillets and Breakfast Plates. Don’t worry they still have eggs benedict.
One of the items that stood out to us was the Chicken and Waffles ($14). Let’s face it, chicken and waffles are a great brunch item anytime, anywhere. At Mamie Taylor’s you can choose between bourbon honey or spicy buffalo style for the chicken. We went with bourbon honey since my friend isn’t into spicy food. The chicken was moist and tender and had a nice sweet flavour from the honey.
On the other hand, the waffle was pretty average, it might’ve been good to serve it with some syrup as it tasted a tad bland. I was expecting a larger portion of waffle as well. The home fries were crispy and the portion was generous. It could’ve used some more seasoning but the ketchup gave it plenty of flavour. As for the apple and kale slaw, it was fresh but could’ve used a bit more dressing for me.
We also had the Pork Belly Sammie ($13) with onion jam, cheddar and gruyere on grilled sourdough bread with a sunny side up egg on top.
This was better than I expected! It was like eating a pork belly grilled cheese sandwich! The pork belly was thinly sliced but there was still a good amount and the egg on top was a nice touch as well. I would recommend this if you’re looking for comfort food and I’d get it again. I also didn’t notice that you can order both homefries AND salad. Darn, should’ve done that instead.
Mamie Taylor’s wasn’t very busy during brunch and service was prompt. Also it was very well priced.
Who else is excited for Avengers: End Game?!
