My friend works in the tourism industry and every year they have a tourism challenge where you try to collect stamps from different tourist attractions and then you can get in for free for the whole year. Sounds like a great perk to me! As part of the tourism challenge, some restaurants (mainly hotel restaurants) also have special offers. Market By Jean-Georges was offering a buy 1 get 1 free breakfast/brunch (up to $25) so we decided to check it out. Market is located inside the Shangri-La Hotel.
We happened to be visiting on Easter Sunday so they served us complimentary Hot Cross Buns. These were warm and had an almost bouncy texture.
For myself, I had the Korean Fried Chicken and Buttermilk Pancake ($20). I thoroughly enjoy Asian inspired items and of course, fried chicken so I had to get this. The Korean Fried Chicken was covered in a sweet glaze with just a hint of spice but it was mostly sweet. The 5 pieces of chicken were tender and went well with the soft pancake. The dish was garnished with some pickled cabbage and cauliflower to help break up the flavours. This dish also reminded me of the duck pancake from Fable Diner but since they use fried chicken here, it had more protein but it was also a few dollars more.
My friend had the West Coast Seafood Frittata ($21)which came with
Free-Range Eggs, Salmon, Halibut, Cod, Squid, Katsuobushi Sauce and Aioli. We enjoyed the Asian influence on this frittata as well (the head chef of Market is Japanese). Due to the presentation, sauces and flavours, it reminded us of okonomiyaki! I loved the crunch of the fried vegetables on top, sort of like a vegetable kakiage.
Service was attentive and pricing wasn’t too bad if we didn’t have the buy 1 get 1 free deal. Overall we had a great experience at Market By Jean-Georges.
