I went to explore the Shipyards Night Market for the first time but didn’t find any of the food trucks interesting so my friend and I decided to get food somewhere else. After doing a quick Google search, we decided on Smoke and Bones BBQ. They’re located near Capilano Mall, just a few minutes from the Lions Gate Bridge. They’ve won several BBQ competitions before as can be seen from the trophy’s they have on display.
We arrived around 6:30pm on a hot day and we were surprised to find that the inside of the restaurant was even hotter. It was definitely over 30 degrees in there and they didn’t have air conditioning, just some slow spinning ceiling fans… However, we were determined to get our BBQ fix so of course we stayed. We just chugged a lot of cold water!
We decided to share the Appetizer Sampler which came with jalapeno peppers stuffed with pulled pork and cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and smoked in the pit, Moink beef and pork meat balls glazed with bourbon BBQL sauce and devilled eggs. I was most excited for the jalapeno peppers and I enjoyed it as a creamy and savoury bite. The meat balls were pretty standard but the devilled eggs weren’t very exciting. For $10, I was expecting a bigger portion and I don’t think it was worth the price. There was literally just one egg!
Our food did take a while to come but when we got our Full Slab of Pork Ribs, we knew it was worth the wait. You can choose 2 sides so we picked the coleslaw and our server highly recommended their fries. The meat on the ribs was so tender and succulent, they just fell off the bone as expected. The BBQ sauce was sweet which I enjoyed.
The coleslaw was a tad plain and I felt like it needed some more dressing but the veggies were fresh and crunchy. The fries were an EXCELLENT recommendation! They used some Cajun seasoning blend so it had a slight kick to it. The cornbread muffin was not dry and very crumbly with a soft buttery texture. For $29, this could be shared between 2 people.
I don’t eat BBQ often but I was glad I tried Smoke and Bones BBQ! I can’t really compare it to other places but it was solid for me.
