Tacos El Gordo was featured on an episode of Tasty: Friend in Town and was also highly rated on Yelp. I was looking forward to some authentic Mexican food since the US is closer to Mexico and they seem to have more Mexican food available. Tacos El Gordo is located near the Wynn hotel.
We were not prepared for the amount of people lining up outside and inside the crowded store. I have never seen this many people at a taco shop before! There was someone at the door directing customers to which line they can join. They have lines based on which protein you wanted e.g. carne asada (steak), al pastor (pork), lengue (beef tongue) etc. Then you can choose how you want your meat. e.g. tacos, quesadillas, vampiros, sopes, mulas, tostadas etc. We had to Google what some of these things were.
It is best to come with multiple people so you can stand in different lines and try different proteins. Be prepared to wait at least 20-30 minutes.
Yardbird came up on Yelp as one of their most popular and highly rated restaurants. Their chicken and waffles dish sounded amazing but was also really pricey ($36 USD which is about $45 CAD). Since I love fried chicken I had to try it.
They have a bar/lounge area on one side and another more brightly lit dining room. We made a reservation for brunch at 10am (when they open) and were promptly seated. Yardbird is located inside the Venetian. It still surprises me that there are people gambling in the morning… or maybe they never went home?
Foret Noire Patisserie is a cake and pastry cafe on Broadway close to the Broadway City Hall station. I had actually visited Foret Noire Patisserie last month but they also invited me to come in to try some of their cakes as well. This post is a combination of both visits.
The following two cakes were complimentary. We tried the Broadway, which had a chocolate biscuit at the bottom, Valrhona chocolate mousse, chocolate crumble, chocolate glaze and vanilla creme brule in the centre. If you’re a fan of chocolate, then this would be perfect for you! It was rich and decadent.
My first trip to Europe was to London! Flat Iron came up a few times in my food search and they’re known for their simple menu featuring the flat iron steak for £11 (or about $18.75). They have various locations across London and we went to the one in Soho. We arrived at about 6:15pm and waited about 30 minutes. They always have a line up so be prepared to wait!
They give you a small cleaver for a knife which was pretty cute! Made me feel dangerous >=)
I was invited to check out the new Fall and Winter menu for Blossom Dim Sum and Grill. As this was a lunch tasting on a weekday, I didn’t get to try all the items since I had to go back to work. This will be a limited review of the appies and small dishes that came out first.
The space was bright and inviting with beautiful murals on the wall. the use of velvet chairs gave the space an even more luxurious feel.
While looking for a brunch spot that takes reservations and didn’t have line ups, I thought of Glowbal and their $12 benny promotion. I’ve been meaning to try them since it sounded like a great deal. I’m all about the cheap eats!
It was a warm day so we opted to sit on the patio. There are 3 benny’s that you can choose from: Original, West Coast or Florentine. They also have other brunch items if you don’t feel like having a benny.
I was arranging a date to catch up with my friend and she told me about this Italian eatery called Il Posto in Ladner village that she had tried. My initial reaction was “What were you doing there? There’s food there?”. I’m down to try new places though and it’s actually pretty close to Richmond.
The building looked cute which was a good sign. It was very quiet here and there seemed to be plenty of parking. Like any other Italian eatery, Il Posto serves a range of pastas and pizzas. We decided to get one of each and share.
I went to explore the Shipyards Night Market for the first time but didn’t find any of the food trucks interesting so my friend and I decided to get food somewhere else. After doing a quick Google search, we decided on Smoke and Bones BBQ. They’re located near Capilano Mall, just a few minutes from the Lions Gate Bridge. They’ve won several BBQ competitions before as can be seen from the trophy’s they have on display.
We arrived around 6:30pm on a hot day and we were surprised to find that the inside of the restaurant was even hotter. It was definitely over 30 degrees in there and they didn’t have air conditioning, just some slow spinning ceiling fans… However, we were determined to get our BBQ fix so of course we stayed. We just chugged a lot of cold water!
