My friends and I gathered at Stormcrow Alehouse for brunch because we wanted to play board games. They are located on Broadway and Fir St., next to Earl’s.
We had passed by before and thought that we should return. It was really bumpin’ at night! This place looks cool inside and they put in a lot of effort to include fantasy themed decorations!
Sadly brunch was terrible and only one item was good.

Originally my friend and I were going to try Twisted Fork for brunch but we were quite turned off by the one hour wait so we headed towards Yaletown in search of another brunch option. We passed by The Flying Pig and surprisingly there was no line up! This was around 1pm. They have three locations now (Yaletown, Gastown, Mount Pleasant) so maybe their customer base is more dispersed now?
We were seated right away and served complimentary Banana Bread which was a nice surprise. The banana bread was sliced thinly and each piece was moist and full of banana flavour. Continue reading →
The Hot Chocolate Festival is on again for the sixth year and after perusing some hot chocolate menus, the Black Magic from Bella Gelateria caught my eye. It’s made with Dark 63% Vanuari chocolate with black sesame paste and matcha whipped cream. The Asian inspired flavours certainly sounded interesting in hot chocolate form!

I don’t think I’ve ever baked as much as I did last month! I was just feeling festive and extra motivated to bake. BRING ON THE CALORIES!
Cranberry Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookies. These turned out really well! Buttery but also sweet and slightly tart. Yum! The recipe was super easy too. You can find it here.
I also bought some gingerbread men cookie cutters recently! Instead of making gingerbread cookies though I made chocolate sugar cookies instead. They were not sugary at all.. I would adjust the recipe and double the amount of sugar. Also I’m not sure why but my cookies were quite hard. Not stale hard but not soft and chewy like I expected. Especially since I made the shortbread cookies the week before. I ended up adding some icing after which helped a bit. Here’s the recipe.
Also, I made Banana Walnut Chocolate Chip Bread! It wasn’t as moist as I wanted to be after the first day but it was not bad. There was still lots of banana flavour, crunchiness from the nuts and chocolate. I think I would cream the butter and sugar better next time maybe that will help. Or take it out of the oven a few mins earlier. It takes an hour and ten mins to bake. Also I’d add more chocolate chips and less walnuts ;) Recipe courtesy of Foodwishes! The finished product did look quite similar to Chef John’s!
Happy New Year everyone!
