Top Shanghai Cuisine

Top Shanghai is one of my favourite Shanghainese restaurants! My family went on a Monday and it wasn’t busy at all. They are usually packed on weekends. Their table spacing is quite cramped so it makes moving around difficult.

Top Shanghai CuisineThis was a Suzhou Style Spiced Smoked Fish.Β The flavour is a little bit sweet and the meat is still flaky but more tough and cooked through? It also has a lot of bones. Continue reading →

PappaRoti

When I first heard that PappaRoti’s slogan was “the father of all buns” I was really skeptical. I was like really… this is it? From the pictures, it looked a LOT like a Chinese pineapple/Mexican bun. So I was interested to see how it would compare. Also, they have 400 locations so they must be good right?

They have coffee and drinks like any other cafe.

The interior was pretty nice and spacious, it’d be a nice place to study or catch up with friends.

I ordered the Original Bun for $3.65. Toppings such as nutella, ice cream, or Pappa cream cheese cost an additional $1.25. I thought the toppings were kinda expensive so I didn’t bother getting any. The bun was served warm and it was nice and soft. The thin caramel coffee topping was light and crisp.Β Inside there was also some butter too but otherwise it was nice and light.

I also tried some of the Pappa cream cheese from my friend. The store employee said that it was available for purchase at Whole Foods? It was a bit salty on it’s own but since I’m not a huge fan of cream cheese I don’t think I would get it with my bun. The employees also said that the kaya topping tasted good too. We had no idea what kaya was and they let us sample some. It tasted very familiar but we weren’t sure what it was. I looked it up and it’s apparently a sweet coconutΒ spread which is popular in Malaysia. So there you go, you learn something new everyday!

Ok so it wasn’t like phenomenally good and I’m not dying to revisit but it was still a good bun and I wouldn’t mind having another one. I really think it’s fine plain though but if you like it sweeter you have quite a few toppings to choose from.
