Chicken and Waffles-Tuc Craft Kitchen

Tuc Craft Kitchen was serving brunch on weekdays for the last few days of the year before New Year’s Eve so my co-workers and I went there for brunch. We were seated upstairs where it felt more cozy and private. This time I was here to try their chicken and waffles. Tuc Craft Kitchen’s chicken and waffles are mentioned often on various “best of brunch” lists and my friend had also recommended it as well. We trekked here through the wind and rain from our office (ok it was like a good 15min walk) so I hoped it would be worth it!

Chewies-Lunch and Happy Hour Time!

I don’t do happy hour often, but when I do it’s at Chewies! They have buck a shuck oysters! Need I say more?
Chewies Steam and Oyster Bar

Okay to be honest it’s only been in the last 2 years that I’ve started eating oysters and boy was I glad that I started! They have a new rule here where each person is only allowed to order 6 oysters at a time per order because sometimes one table will order a lot and then the person shucking oysters won’t be able to move onto the next order for a long time. However, you can order many times! They have $1 oysters as well as $2 premium oysters. I personally can’t tell the difference so it doesn’t matter to me! Read more

Yolk’s Restaurant and Commissary

Yolk’s Breakfast was a popular food truck located outside the Stadium skytrain station. Although I never visited their food truck before I had always heard that their chicken and waffles were really good! They’ve opened an actual store now on E Hastings and Clark Drive. It feels really out of the way there but it seems like they have a large enough following to attract customers (like my co workers and I!). The outside of the building is all blue like their food truck. The inside looks like it could be renovated some more but it has an old school diner kind of feel. Water is self serve!

Chicken and Waffles

So I got the Chicken and Waffles and it was huge!!! I was not expecting this much chicken… maybe half as much. The fried chicken was crispy but wasn’t really seasoned and there was a lot of maple syrup so it ended up tasting sweet and crunchy. I think there was supposed to be gravy but now that I think about it, I didn’t notice any or they didn’t have enough. After a while I thought it was too sweet. I think I’ll ask for syrup on the side next time if I get this again.  The waffles were alright but I had too much syrup by then so it just tasted sweet and I think the one on the bottom was getting soggy.

Yolk's Breakfast Pancakes

These were their Buttermilk Pancakes which came with double smoked bacon, ham or English bangers. The pancakes were soft and kind of chewy? My co worker said they felt really dense and she was full quickly.

Yolk's BreakfastThis was the special of the day: Fraser Valley Duck Confit with pork crackling, spinach, poached egg and orange marmalade. There is also the option of getting two eggs.

Yolk's Breakfast

This was the Double Smoked Bacon Eggs Benedict Style (Two Eggs Double Everything) with real Hollandaise and their Truffle-Lemon Hashbrowns. The bacon was nice and crispy, the English muffin was crunchy and the eggs were nicely poached. The hashbrowns were crispy on the outside, well seasoned and addicting! I don’t think you can go wrong ordering this!

I think the chicken and waffles fell below my expectations and I’d heard a lot about them before! And I love fried chicken! I wish they’d work on their decor too but I’m here for the food! They’re currently not open on Mondays and Tuesdays.
