Disclaimer: I was invited to a tasting by Monplaisir Macarons. All food was complimentary but opinions are my own.
Monplaisir Macarons is based in Calgary but the owner Jean-Marc Mons and his wife are hoping to expand into the Vancouver market so they set up a tasting event at the Best Western Plus Chateau. The macarons are made with 100% natural ingredients and are certified gluten-free. They do not use any animal gelatin, preservatives, additives or trans fat. Jean-Marc’s goal was to make the macarons as authentic as possible.
Flavours available are: Tiramisu, Nutella, Lemon, Passion, Pistachio, Honey Lavender, Caramel, French Vanilla, Creme Brulee, Raspberry, Red Velvet, White Chocolate and Cookies and Cream.
I was having some serious cake cravings and I remembered seeing a bunch of Instagram posts on Trafiq so it was about time I went back. I’m pretty sure Instagram feeds all my cravings since I’m easily influenced. I noticed they had a “new” salted caramel cake that had positive reviews so I hoped that it was available! Trafiq is located on Main and 26th and they also close at 6pm everyday so it’s hard to visit on weekdays if you have work.
The hot chocolate festival is back again this year for the 7th time with 29 participants and 61 flavours to try! I had a craving for Lucky’s Doughnuts and Forty Ninth Parallel Cafe is also participating in the hot chocolate festival so it was the best of both worlds. Their hot chocolate is also reasonably priced as well. The festival runs from Jan. 19 to Feb. 14, 2017.
I was not planning to go to Black Star Pastry at the beginning of my trip but I happened upon one of their newer locations in a Japanese bookstore called Kinokuniya in The Galeries (a shopping centre). The watermelon cake is their most popular item and it’s gorgeous! Perfect for Instagram photos. ;)
Black Star Pastry is located right at the entrance of the bookstore. The bookstore is massive and sells tons of cool stuff akin to Chapters here. For example, they were selling the gold crown thing that Sailor Moon has on her forehead and I got kinda giddy over it. Read more
My friend kindly sent me the Baker’s Krate box last month for my birthday and boy was I excited to receive it! To be fair, it was sitting at the post office for a few days before I went to pick it up because I missed it at my house…
Baker’s Krate selects different hand-crafted baked goods from all across Canada to ship to you every month. Sounds delicious already right? The treats they selected for August were right up my alley!
Passion Tree is located in Chatswood and it’s like a big shopping mall/shopping area on the North Shore of Sydney. I must say their shopping malls are really nice!!! There are also a lot of small cafes in the middle of the mall for people to eat at while shopping. They seemed like nice cafes, not like Starbucks or something. Also, I noticed that some places even show how many kilojoules/calories are in each food item!
Did you know there’s a food holiday for every day of the year? Sadly there aren’t enough restaurants that celebrate them or it would be too costly. For National Cheesecake Day this year (July 28th), Trees Organic Coffee offered cheesecakes for 50% off!
They are voted Vancouver’s best cheesecake and they have a few locations around Vancouver. I went to the one on Granville Street beside Waterfront station. I love discounts/freebies (especially when it comes to food) and it’s close to where I work so I had to go! I thought there would be some crazy line ups but it was pretty tame. The wait was about 15 minutes or so. This is in contrast to that time I waited for an hour at IHOP for National Pancake Day (NEVER AGAIN).
