If you love brunch as much as I do, then you’ve probably heard of the ridiculous line ups at Jam Cafe. This is their second location and the first is in Victoria.
If you didn’t already know, I hate line ups. Or if you knew, you’re probably sick of me saying this all the time. Luckily for me, I enticed my boyfriend with photos and reviews of Jam Cafe and he lined up for me =’D I joined him about half way through so the total wait was over an hour but less than 1.5hrs. He’s lined up for other things before so he has more patience than me. There is room for more all day breakfast/brunch restaurants in Vancouver if you’re thinking of getting into the restaurant business! While we were waiting, a server came out with samples of their waffles which made the wait more bearable. The Breakfast Table is situated on Broadway and Granville, across from McDonald’s. They specialize in all day breakfast/brunch with an Asian twist.
The inside is painted a robin’s egg blue and there’s a moderate amount of seating. When I went in November, it wasn’t too busy yet around lunch time and there was just a short wait. They can call you or text you when your table is ready so we just went over to Chapters to browse around first.
The menu features various hashes (is this a word?) with different proteins such as fried chicken, beef bulgogi and smoked cosalmon along with more classic dishes like the classic benedict, waffles and French toast.
EDIT: Ok never mind I went again the fries are still HORRIBLE and everything else is really average so it’s not exactly a brunch place.
I was looking for a brunch place to go to before watching the Avengers and the Fish Shack was relatively close so we decided to try it. The Fish Shack is owned by the Glowbal Group and it used to be some Mediterranean place that I also tried but it closed down.
It was interesting how they used pallets to decorate one side of their wall and they had a fishing theme going on which was pretty cool. There are also some TV’s for watching sports games.
None of us have been to Forage so we were excited to see what they had in store for us.
The special of the day was the Pork Belly Eggs Benedict. Crispy potatoes with an addictive house made ketchup were served side. Not sure what else was in the ketchup but it was probably some sort of spice. The pork belly was fatty but not overly so and there was a good amount of it too. My eggs were poached to a medium as per my request. I found that the hollandaise sauce was quite buttery and rich as but a tad salty as well especially when eating with the pork belly. David also said that he could taste the tarragon in this dish but since I’m not sure what that tastes like we’ll take his word for it!
This was the Classic Benny served with back bacon and the same crispy potatoes and ketchup as above.
This was the Corned Bison Hash with sunny side up eggs, kale, house made sauerkraut and IPA mustard hollandaise with lots of multigrain toast on the side. This dish was bigger than the eggs benny dishes! It will definitely fill you up. I tried a bit of the bison and it was good… can’t really describe it since I haven’t had much bison before!
There was also house made blueberry and strawberry jam available for the toast as well and they were both fruity but not too sweet.
We had an enjoyable brunch together and I was surprised that the restaurant wasn’t busier for brunch but maybe it was because it was pouring earlier.
