I was invited by ChineseBites to try some of the desserts at Icy Bar. They have a few locations now: Parker Place, Crystal Mall, Kingsway and Boundary, Kingsway and Knight and the Richmond Night Market. I first went to Icy Bar back in March and I really liked it so I was excited to come back!
Isn’t this beautiful? Don’t you want this on a hot summer day? I suggest you drive over there right now! You can order an Eight Mix Icy for $10 or a Four Mix Icy for $6.75. They have an impressive number of toppings to choose from. The mango was fresh and sweet and of course there was my favourite topping: mochi! Icy Bar offers green tea mochi, mango mochi, taro mochi and regular mochi! Continue reading →
Mango Mama is the newest Asian dessert place in Richmond. The name is reminiscent of Mango Yummy and you can expect similar dessert items from them. Mango Mama is located in the plaza across from Aberdeen below Ninkazu. A few years ago, this used to be Cafe Waraku, a Japanese style pasta cafe.
Hello! Ok excuse my lame pun in the title… I met up with some of my former co-workers for dinner at Sushi Bella and then we went to Icy Bar for dessert! Icy Bar is a shaved ice and dessert cafe similar to Mango Yummy in Richmond but Icy Bar has been around for a lot longer. They also have locations in Richmond but the one we went to was on Kingsway.
You can get 8 toppings on your shaved ice for $8 or 4 toppings for $6.50. We decided to get two of the 4 topping shaved ice. If you order the 8 topping option, they’ll give you more ice in proportion to all the toppings. Or that’s what it looked like when I saw other tables ordering it.
This had mango, glutinous black rice, red bean and taro mochi.
This one had pearls, lychee, strawberry and green tea mochi.
The best part about Icy Bar is that they give you your own squeeze tube/bottle of condensed milk!!! WE USED A LOT. We practically drank it but it was awesome! =D Usually they charge you more for condensed milk.
We also ordered a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side for $2. It melted super fast… wasn’t the best ice cream and I’m not sure why I got it on the side and not on top… but they offered to give it to me on the side so I was like ok. I don’t think I would need ice cream next time anyway so I can save $2!
By the way, the ice is not flavoured but the texture was good. The toppings were all delicious and came with a generous amount. Nothing to complain about! I bet all the condensed milk we dumped on it helped!
It’s also a nice place to hang out with friends here! The store is not super tiny like Mango Yummy so it’d be a lot easier to get a table. They also serve drinks, tofu pudding and hot soup desserts.
After eating dinner at Shanghai House, my friends and I still had room for dessert so we walked to the relatively new Mango Yummy across from Richmond Centre. Once we opened the doors, we were hit with the smell of durian and although I’ve actually never tried durian, I don’t find the smell atrocious but just an FYI they do serve durian pancake/crepes here!
The store is tiny as usual and since we had a group of seven, we ended up waiting for 35 mins for a table. At the same time, we couldn’t come up with a better dessert plan so we ended up waiting. We finally managed to get a table meant for three and squished seven people around it.
They have an impressive array of drinks, smoothies, tofu desserts, shaved ice, sweet soup, toast and some waffles, cakes and crepes. I remember visiting their stall at the night market for at least two years.
This was the Mango and Mochi with Vanilla Ice Cream Shaved Ice. This was served on a plastic dish and there was an impressive amount of toppings. The mango was pretty sweet and the mochi had a very satisfying chew to it. The shaved ice is not flavoured though like at Frappe Bliss. It’s just ice but shaved very finely and I really liked the texture here.
