Sydney Eats: Brunching at Foodcraft Espresso and Bakery

As I was researching where to eat in Sydney (because that was obviously more important than sightseeing), I noticed that they had so many more brunch places! There are cafes that are just focused on brunch and lunch and they close at night. We need more all day brunch!!! We need to start a petition!!! AHHHHHHHHHH

Foodcraft Espresso and Bakery is known for their famous Tella Ball Shakes and the Nutella one took over the internet last year. The “Tella Ball” is basically a filled doughnut. Lucky’s Doughnuts – Main St.

I have been going through a doughnut phase lately so I dropped by Lucky’s Doughnuts!

I managed to snag the Matcha Bismarck on my visit! I’ve seen pictures of it and boy was I excited to eat it! Matcha everything ftw! =D

The inside was filled with a glorious matcha cream and there was plenty of it too. The matcha flavour was distinct but still fairly light. Also I was surprised that there was a tart lemon flavour from the icing on the outside as well but I like lemon so that was good for me! The bright green doughnut was soft and not doughy. I totally inhaled it… =D There goes my waistline…

Also tried the Memphis Hash. I had no idea what it was but the server described it as a peanut butter cream filled doughnut with Nutella icing on top and carmelized banana slices. Sounded like a  good combination to me! There was plenty of peanut butter cream but the dough part was more dry compared to the Matcha Bismarck. The carmelized bananas were stiff on the sides from the sugar glaze so it tasted a little unusual to me but it was a fun doughnut creation that successfully united peanut butter and Nutella.

Purebread Bakery Obsession

I posted about my first visit to Purebread about a month ago and I had already dubbed it my dessert heaven. If you didn’t know already, I am a huge fan of baked goods! So it was no surprise that I would be returning to Purebread soon. See what else I tried below!

As I had previously professed in my Starbucks post that their Cranberry Bliss Bar is my favourite holiday goodie there. When I saw that Purebread had a Cranberry Cream Bar that was basically the same thing, I knew it had to GET IN MY BELLY (ok I just really wanted to say that :D).

Purebread Bakery

Purebread’s version has a thicker crust layer which was soft and moist with a subtle ginger flavour. The cream cheese layer was sweet and accented by the cranberries on top. This was a winner for me and a great dupe for the Cranberry Bliss Bar and probably better because I like that there is more crust! The ginger flavour might not be for everyone though even though I think it’s mild and my friend thought it was a bit too sweet. It is a big bar though so you could always share!

Waffles at Belgium Place

A new waffle place  opened up where Death by Chocolate used to be on the corner of Fir and Broadway. My friend who was craving waffles suggested IHop and I’m just like no… after some research I found Belgium Place! It’s got the word Belgium in it so they should make good waffles right? They also serve some soups and sandwiches too. The cafe space has a lot of wood furnishing and they also have a shelf with a few French kid’s books. It doesn’t seem too busy so it could be a nice place to chat with some friends.

Belgium PlaceThe waffles are all Liege waffles and cost $3.80 plain. They also have waffles with chocolate and waffles with chocolate and almonds. and they are both $4.75. This was the Waffles with Strawberry and it was one of the special creations on the menu. It was served with 2 scoops of vanilla gelato and strawberry compote with a side of whipped cream. The size of the waffle was pretty big! Price wise it’s a bit cheaper than some other waffles joints coming in at $7.80 but pretty close.

IHOP-Broadway

My friends and I decided to visit IHOP on Broadway before school started. This location is upstairs right by the 7-11 on Oak street. It looked pretty new and clean compared to the one in Richmond. The service was also quite friendly and prompt. They menu had a lot of options so we spent a long time debating what we should share. They also had a special menu where they had 7 specials all for $8 each.

This was the bacon and cheddar hash brown stack . Mmm hash browns! It came with a choice of two buttermilk waffles or a fruit salad. Naturally since we were at IHOP, my friend opted for the pancakes xD (well under some peer pressure from me…). The cheese and the hollandaise sauce seemed to go quite well with the hash browns! I kinda wished I had ordered this instead haha

Nutella banana crepes with bacon and eggs :) The crepes were hidden under a mountain of whipped cream and covered with some strawberry sauce. It seems like they really don’t skimp on the whipped cream at IHOP! Makes me fat >.< There was a lot going on here so overall it tasted good because it was sweet from the nutella and the strawberry sauces.

Chicken Quesadilla. Didn’t try it but it looks pretty good with ample filling.

I think this was the pick a pancake combo. It comes with bacon, eggs, hash browns and your choice of pancakes. Note the lump of whipped cream!

Ok horrible angle here but I think this is another combo with red velvet pancakes!!! They were actually really good and not too sweet.

DESSERT! Crispy strawberry banana cheesecake! :D “Creamy cheesecake layered with caramel and chunks of banana, quick-fried in a flaky pastry tortilla. Topped with cool strawberry topping, fresh slices of banana and whipped topping.” It was really good :D The cheesecake was pretty creamy and smooth. Anything deep fried is good! (This is why I’m fat)

I definitely like this location a lot better than the Richmond one and the pricing is reasonable too.

Chocolate Chip Cookies and Brownies =)

Yay finally found time to bake with my friends :) We made good old fashioned chocolate chip cookies!

My friend made all the dough into round balls while usually I just scoop it from the batter and dump in on the tray.

Ahhh so beautiful and delicious! They were perfect!!! <3 Felt so fat eating them though haha

We also made really easy Nutella brownies by following this recipe! Well we tripled it so that we could coat the bottom of the pan since we weren’t using muffin tins and making brownie bites but it’s the easiest recipe ever! No pictures though ><

Macaron Failure… I mean important lessons learned!

Recently my favourite YouTube chef, Chef John, put up a video for chocolate macarons so a friend and I decided to try it! This recipe required almond meal/almond flour and I went to Safeway and didn’t find any. I found some at Pricesmart Foods but they ran out. Then I found some finely ground almonds there which is essentially what almond meal/flour is so I just bought that. However we sort of failed because we forgot to rewatch the video and uhm missed some steps… BUT ANYWAY they still tasted good! LOL so here are a few photos haha

Ok I think we made these a little too flat =( Then it lacked that texture when you bite into it because well there wasn’t much to bite into… We did a swirly pattern which didn’t work that well since they were too flat.

These are actually the green tea ones we made after. They were a tad  bitter because I added too much green tea powder. These macaron measurements need to be extremely precise! ><

Assembled together! Ours were actually pretty big so they looked more like cookie sandwiches than macarons! haha Instead of making our own filling we just decided to use nutella and that worked out quite well too. Even with the green tea ones! XD Our macarons lacked the little “feet” that they’re suppose to have around the edges and the texture wasn’t there either. They were really more like cookies… but anyway they still tasted good so maybe next time we can improve some more! Maybe they can look like this next time!

Or I can just buy them…
