TAKO (Taqueria Koreano)

I’ve previously tried Korean-Mexican fusion food before at the Disco Cheetah food truck and it was pretty good so I was interested in trying a similar concept at TAKO or Taqueria Koreano.

They are just outside the Stadium Chinatown skytrain station which is extremely convenient! I work close to Waterfront station so I just hop on the train for a few stops to get here for a quick lunch.

Miura Restaurant and Bar-Rebranded

Disclaimer: All food was complimentary but opinions are my own

Thanks to Instagram foodie and food blogger, Jacqueline (Check out her blog here), I got to visit the new rebranded Miura Restaurant and Bar with some other foodies. It was formerly known as Miura Waffle and Milk Bar. They were also featured on You Gotta Eat Here! Don’t worry they still have some of their famous waffle sandwiches on the menu! As a restaurant and bar, they serve appies and entrees that are more izakaya style. Of course there are also alcoholic beverages.

The blue one is Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the orange one is the Morning Glory but I can’t remember the name of the other drink. Continue reading →

Frites Granville-Not Your Usual Fries

I know most people have fries as a side to their meal but for me, I like to have the fries as the main course. I saw that Frites Granville had an exciting selection of gourmet fries so I had to check it out.

Frites Granville

Some many appetizing options like the Pad Thai fries and Okonomi fries! It’s nice that they have pictures on the wall to help you decide (or make it harder to decide if you’re like me).  Continue reading →

VanVan Izakaya

Disclaimer: All food was complimentary but opinions are my own

I was invited to another ChineseBites event at VanVan Izakaya on Robson across from Forage. All the dishes below were shared between 6 people and we tried most of their menu. If you see awkward shadows in my photo, that’s someone else pointing their camera at the same time (or everyone)!

VanVan IzakayaThis was the Unagi Kabayaki with teriyaki sauce.  The eel had a nice sweet flavour from the teriyaki sauce and it was tender. I like eel so I approve of this. Continue reading →

Big Rock Urban Eatery-Not Impressed

Big Rock Urban Eatery is the newest brewery to join the Olympic Village area. They started out in Alberta and now they have a BC location.

We were here for the food though since I am still acquiring the taste for beer. The building doesn’t look like much from the outside but the inside looked industrial hip. It was really loud inside even though there weren’t that many people or loud music playing but it was hard to hear people from across the table or even beside you. Maybe it was just the way the building was constructed.

White Spot

I ended up eating lunch at like 3pm and ended up going to White Spot at Oakridge since it was convenient and also they have happy hour from 3-6pm so I thought I’d take advantage of that. Also I saw pictures of their new burger guest stars on Instagram and they looked good.

Unfortunately we did not end up picking appies that qualified for happy hour because a) I can’t read the menu obviously and b) even though I checked with the server and she was like yup yup it turned out that it was a nope nope >.> so we ended up feeling ripped off after and I could’ve ordered other stuff that was more worth the money.

White Spot

This was the Crispy Three Cheese Ravioli filled with mozzarella, parmesan and ricotta cheese and served with arrabiata sauce. The ravioli were fried and cheesy inside but tasted mostly doughy and all the different cheeses they used didn’t seem to have much of an impact.

Poutine at Frenchie’s

Frenchie’s has a new location on Main and Broadway now and my co workers and I decided to hit it up on Friday. The interior has a bar and lots of interesting paintings. Unfortunately I can’t describe the paint style for you. The menu consists of poutine, sandwiches and Montreal smoked meat sandwiches. Some of the poutines come in either small or medium or large and some only come in medium. There’s a warning on the menu that says they’re not responsible for your addiction to their poutine haha

Frenchie's Poutine

This was the 6oz Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich and it came with a side of coleslaw. The meat was shaved very thin and wasn’t too salty. Their smoked meat is brought in from Montreal. The coleslaw was very lightly dressed and I think it could’ve used a bit more dressing.

Frenchie's Poutine

This was the medium sized Smoked Meat Poutine and it was huge!!! Seriously if this is medium, I don’t want to know how big a large is…

Frenchie's Poutine

This was the small Classic Poutine. Can’t go wrong with the classic! It was also only $6.

Frenchie's Poutine

This was the Pulled Pork Poutine with lots of tender slow cooked pork on top. The gravy was really good and there were also some onions in here as well as squeaky cheese curds.

Some of their more meat heavy poutine creations (steak poutine, pepperoni poutine, meat lovers poutine) can get expensive but then again they are huge so you get your bang for your buck. Our poutine cravings have been satisfied for quite a while now!

Cafe de L’Orangerie

Cafe de L’Orangerie is in a small plaza on W73rd and Hudson. It’s right next to Penang Delight Cafe. They serve a lot of Japanese style spaghetti and Japanese takes on other dishes.

Cafe de L'Orangerie

We shared this Beef Stew Poutine with mozzarella and cheddar cheese. It comes in a small or large size and this was the small but it was still a pretty big portion to me. The beef stew was just minced beef with some small pieces of carrot and onion. The cheese was actually in slices under the sauce so a lot of it wasn’t melted yet when it was served but it did eventually melt more. The fries were exactly like Costco fries!!! I love Costco fries since they’re quite crispy but still soft so this was a win for me! I could probably eat this for my entree.

McDonald’s Poutine…Don’t Bother

So my brother got McDonald’s poutine and I tried some and we both agreed that it was just their fries+gravy and cheese curds. Since their fries are so skinny it just doesn’t taste good with the gravy and cheese which weren’t special either. Unless you’re extremely desperate, please go somewhere else for poutine. The fries taste much better with just salt. I wasn’t expecting much anyway.
