My co-workers were craving burgers so we decided to hit up Romer’s Burger Bar in Yaletown. They have three locations: River District, Kitsilano and Yaletown. The burgers at Romer’s do not come with fries so you will have to add them separately to your order. The fries come in an individual size or in a shareable size.
This was the Monty Mushroom Burger made with a hand-crafted patty, carmelized onions, sauteed portobello mushrooms, her garlic Boursin, and baby arugula. Each burger is also accompanied with a banana pepper if you want to add some spice to your burger. Continue reading →
Thyme to Indulge is such a cute name for a restaurant. They seem like they’re known for their brunch but I just went for a late lunch. The space is whimsically decorated and they even sell many flavours of macarons in a display case. Not sure how good they are though…
We explored their menu online before showing up and we saw The Jerk which sounded interesting. The online menu never mentioned that it was a sandwich though and also didn’t say that it came with fries or salad so we were pleasantly surprised. The sandwich consisted of roasted jerk chicken, grilled pineapples, avocado and guava chutney with a house made aioli sauce. I believe I’ve only had jerk chicken once before and that was at the Caribbean Festival and it was more heavily seasoned and grilled. This roasted version was almost on the dry side. There were bursts of sweetness from the grilled pineapple that helped keep the flavour interesting though. The bun was soft but unremarkable. I don’t know my bread but it might’ve been brioche? Anyway, I wouldn’t really recommend this sandwich and I was expecting a bit more from it.

On another spontaneous work lunch outing, we decided to go to Cafe Medina! I’ve never been but I’ve certainly heard a lot about them. They have rave reviews! Also, long line ups but hey that’s how you know the food is good right? Thankfully it was a weekday and there was no line up at 1:30pm. Hurray (I hate line ups)! They are located on Richards and Robson Street now.
One of the items you must try is their lattes. They have some interesting flavours like lavender, salted caramel and raspberry caramel. We decided to share the Raspberry Caramel Latte. I am not a coffee aficionado (really I go to Starbucks/Blenz if I do get coffee…) but I could tell this was a superbly well-made latte! It was velvety in texture with hints of raspberry and caramel. I believe it is the smoothest latte I’ve ever had and I was nothing but impressed.

Happy December! I can’t believe Christmas is only 24 days away! I’m trying to get Christmas-y now and I just decorated my staircase with purple and gold foil garland.

For my friend’s birthday, we decided to celebrate at Sura Korean restaurant in Richmond. It’s located where Tropika used to be inside Aberdeen mall. I’ve never been to their location in downtown before but the reviews for the Richmond location were really bad… so I was just crossing my fingers and hoping they were wrong.
The servers will bring your food over on a small cart with all the food on it instead of carrying each plate. For the Bulgogi Bibimbap, they mixed it tableside and they ask you how much hot sauce you want mixed in too. Since we had a lot of people sharing I didn’t end up trying a lot of this dish but it tasted standard.

I read some posts raving about the brunch at the new Chewies in Coal Harbour so I decide to visit the Kits location since it was the same brunch menu.
I decided on the Braised Short Rib Hash with potato home fries, black eyed peas and two poached eggs. Sorry I should’ve taken a picture of the other side so you can see the short ribs. It turns out only one of my eggs was poached. The other one turned out to be more soft boiled instead. The short ribs were really tender and juicy. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and seasoned with Cajun spices. The black eyed peas were in a tomato and onion based sauce and everything tasted good mixed up! Our server also offered us hot sauce which I put on my eggs. This was a really good dish! It was also really filling from all the potatoes.
This was the Southern Crab Cake Benny with avocado, Cajun Hollandaise Sauce and potato home fries. I tried a few bites of this and it was really good too! I think I liked it better than my dish. Or maybe I just like crab cakes and bennies. I thought the avocado was an interesting addition.
Definitely a solid brunch here! I also liked the atmosphere there, it just seemed really vibrant. I really want to come back for dinner now! Also I want to try their chicken and waffles and southern fried chicken! Yes I love me some fried chicken! Chewies lived up to the hype for sure!
