Bai Bua Thai-Affordable Thai

A few weeks ago the Royal Family Circus was in town and my friends and I got cheap tickets on Groupon! It was only $15 each so that was a great deal for a night of entertainment. They were set up on the PNE fair grounds so we went to Bai Bua Thai on E. Hastings and Nanaimo for dinner first. It’s right across from the 95 B-line stop.

Happy Tree House BBQ

My friend wanted to try out Happy Tree House BBQ for our next gathering and I’m down to try new places! I haven’t heard much about Happy Tree House BBQ so I didn’t have any expectations but my friend said that she noticed it was always busy in here when she went to Koto Izakaya which is located in the same plaza. Happy Tree House BBQ specializes in meat skewers.

We had 5 people which was good because there is a min. order of 5 for some of the skewers. Above we have the Chicken Knees and the Pork skewers. The seasoning they used was really tasty and not too salty. The meat was nicely grilled and tender. The skewers are brought to the table as they are ready. Read more

International Summer Night Market 2015

Disclaimer: All food was complimentary but opinions are my own

Over the weekend I was invited by ChineseBites to the International Summer Night Market (the one near IKEA). On our way there, we almost ran over a super cute bunny as it dashed across the road! Don’t worry it survived! Okay back to the night market…

My boyfriend and I arrived around 8pm and the night market was dead compared to the other night market (the duck one). There were hardly any vendors and there weren’t that many food vendors either. It was pretty sad since this was the original night market that I used to go to but I guess the competition has gotten tough. On the bright side, this means literally no lines ups and no crowds. I also heard the food is a bit cheaper here and no entry fee either.

Prepare for lots of pictures!

Sawasdee Thai

It was about time that I got my hands on some Thai food which I clearly don’t eat often enough! We arrived at Sawasdee Thai for lunch and they were understaffed so we had to wait 10 mins for a table even though they had tables but they weren’t cleared and there were only two servers working.

Since we had to wait for a table, we spent our time deciding what to order. All their lunch specials are under $10 and come with a spring roll and a skewer. They are also closed for lunch on Mondays.

Zakkushi Lunch Sets

Zakkushi just started serving lunch Wed-Sun at their Main St. location. According to their website, they will be serving lunch everyday from May onwards.

Zakkushi LunchI got the Zakkushi set which seemed to be the best deal with 4 kinds of skewers (chicken, pork, garlic stub and seasonable vegetables), a daily appetizer which was marinated lotus root with sesame seeds, miso soup, 3 pieces of sashimi (salmon and tuna), and Soboro don (seasoned and minced chicken with egg on rice. I liked that there was so much variety in one lunch set. The stars of the set were the skewers and they were all good and well seasoned. I wish there was more! I’m not sure if I’ve eaten okra before so it tasted a bit weird to me. For the rice, I think it would’ve been nice if they used a poached egg instead of the shredded egg. Since each skewer costs around $2 I think this set was worth it.

Zakkushi LunchHere’s the Premium Combo with Kobe prime rib, chicken, pork and okra. Basically the only difference is the Kobe prime rib and it comes on it’s own little grill rack! Not sure why that’s necessary…?

Zakkushi Lunch

P-toro Don with poached egg, seaweed and green onion sauce. This looked pretty good too!

This place is pretty small so you should make a reservation if you have a large group. Also, all their desserts are $2.80 during lunch time! Check out their lunch menu here. You can also read my post on their dinner here.
