Passion 8 Dessert Cafe

As a huge fan of Taiwanese thick toast and carbs in general, I was drawn to the toasts from Passion 8 Dessert Cafe.  Here they call them “toastery”. They are also known for their shaved ice. Passion 8 is located on Cambie and 14th near Tropika.

I really didn’t feel like having shaved ice though since it was -5 outside but they come in two different sizes and you can also do take out as well. Actually in general I’m not crazy for shaved ice if there are other options around. I haven’t even been to Snowy Village yet!  Read more

Candy Tree Dessert-Shaved Ice, Durian Waffles and More!

Disclaimer: All food was complimentary but opinions are my own

I was invited to another Chinese Bites event and this time we hit up Candy Tree Dessert. They are located on Kingsway near Patterson and close to the Patterson skytrain station. I knew they would offer similar desserts to Icy Bar so I was ready to embrace everything! My dessert stomach is always ready.

We were separated into 3 different tables and each table ordered their own items but I still took pictures of stuff from other tables. This place is pretty small so it’s probably best for small groups since the waits are going to be really long.

Icy Bar-Dessert Buffet

Disclaimer: All food was complimentary but opinions are my own

I was invited by ChineseBites to try some of the desserts at Icy Bar. They have a few locations now: Parker Place, Crystal Mall, Kingsway and Boundary,  Kingsway and Knight and the Richmond Night Market. I first went to Icy Bar back in March and I really liked it so I was excited to come back!

Icy Bar Isn’t this beautiful? Don’t you want this on a hot summer day? I suggest you drive over there right now! You can order an Eight Mix Icy for $10 or a Four Mix Icy for $6.75. They have an impressive number of toppings to choose from. The mango was fresh and sweet and of course there was my favourite topping: mochi! Icy Bar offers green tea mochi, mango mochi, taro mochi and regular mochi! Read more

Pearl Castle

There are so many Taiwanese cafes to choose from now so it had been a while since my last visit to Pearl Castle. We visited the Sexsmith location for a late lunch. I wasn’t that hungry so I decided that the best option would be to order thick toast and a drink. I started liking Taiwanese thick toast a lot after getting one from SoHo Tea Room. I just like my carbs a lot haha x)

Pearl CastleThe Peach Slush was well, just peachy to me. Not too icy or overly sweet. I wish bubble tea drinks came in smaller sizes, then it would be cheaper and I wouldn’t have to drink as many calories! Technically this drink can feed two people. Or two people like me who don’t want to drink too much… This costs $4.25 which is already on the lower end of the price range but I guess that’s the norm now right?

Pearl CastlePearl Castle offers a variety of thick toast including a special one topped with almonds but since I’m not really a big almond fan I went with the chocolate fluffy cream thick toast. When I got the toast there was no “fluffy cream” in sight. So I’m not even really sure what that means. The layer of chocolate on top was similar to the topping on a pineapple bun. Sort of crumbly in texture but underneath you could taste the butter that the used on the bread. The piece of toast also wasn’t as big and fluffy as the one from SoHo Tea Room but it was alright as far as toast goes. The chocolate topping wasn’t that chocolatey or sweet either. I expected the chocolate to be like a Nutella spread. Was I expecting too much? It was still enjoyable but maybe I’ll stick with the butter and condensed milk toasts.

Pearl CastleMy friend had Satay Beef with Noodles and it came with a side of grass jelly pudding. I really liked the flavour of the satay sauce and it made the whole dish quite delicious. I thought the portion was bigger than I expected too. It also helps that the plate was big haha Moreover, it was a bit on the oily side and my friend commented that everything is served with kimchi nowadays! We are not quite sure why…

Pearl CastleWe also got an appetizer to share. The deep fried tofu was very light and crispy. Despite the fact that it seemed to be seasoned on the outside, they tasted quite plain without the dipping sauce. I can’t quite articulate what kind of sauce it was though… And there was a side of kimchi too. The kimchi had a lot of spicy sauce and it gave the tofu some more flavour too but it wasn’t very good kimchi.

We enjoyed our meal here and they had pretty solid food as usual. The waitress was a little hard to flag down though even though it wasn’t busy.

Soho Tea Room- Free Toast Special!

Okay I have to admit that the cheap Asian in my perks up at the sound of FREE. In this case, Soho Tea Room offers a special from 2-5pm daily where if you buy a bubble tea drink of $4+, then you receive complimentary free toast! Sounds good already and toast is valued at around $4 too. I finally decided on getting their Sesame milk tea with pearls and the Condensed Milk with Butter Thick Toast.

Soho Tea Room I enjoyed this version of sesame bubble tea because the texture wasn’t too gritty and you can taste and see the ground up toasted sesame seeds too. On the other hand, I found the pearls to be too hard so they may have been previously frozen or something. =(

Soho Tea Room MMM okay I have to say this was really good. How can you  not like toast with condensed milk and butter?! The edges were nicely toasted and crispy while the middle was super soft and delicious! You first taste the sweetness of the condensed milk and then the saltiness from the butter afterwards and it was just warm and heavenly. Oh and did I mention FREE yet? ;)

Soho Tea Room Meanwhile my friend had the Satay beef with rice noodle soup. I really liked this too although it wasn’t very spicy at all. Also the rice noodles ended up soaking up all the soup and they expanded so this is something you should eat right away!

You can also read about their honey toast boxes in my post here.

PS. I’m not being paid to visit them. I just realized I sound like their brand ambassador already. =_________=
